Last week, the Derbyshire Sector Dolomites Expedition team re-assembled for one last time at the Carriage House, Chatsworth House to have the Shackleton Trophy presented for winning the most adventurous and innovative RAF Air Cadets expedition nationally in 2024.
This prestigious event ended a 2-year journey for the team, as well as over 3 years of planning, training, and effort for the DofE project for the Sector. In front of notable guests including, the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire: Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill, President of the Shackleton Association: Air Vice-Marshall Andrew Roberts, Commandant Air Cadet: Air Commodore Al Lewis, Chairman of the Ulysses Trust: Brigadier Tim Seal, as well as other representatives of support organisations.
The team gave a presentation on the expedition, had the opportunity to share their experiences with the guests during the evening, and finally were awarded the Shackleton Trophy and individual certificates by the Air Vice-Marshall Roberts and Air Commodore Lewis.
Collecting the trophy on behalf of the team were Sgt Matti Ager from 331 (Chesterfield) Squadron and FS Sophie Green 2326 (Clay Cross) Squadron who were also awarded their Gold DofE badge having finally had their award signed off just two days before. In the process this meant all 20 team members present had completed their Gold Award since the expedition, a 100% conversion rate from expedition to full awards, the key success indicator agreed between the team and funders as a sign of success.
On the evening, Trent Wing also announced the intention to repeat the expedition in 2026, so watch this space for more exciting updates to follow.
We are thankful to Lord and Lady Burlington for allowing use of the venue for such a special event.
Commenting on the special evening, Trent Wing Duke of Edinburgh Officer, Sqn Ldr Gill Wills said “The Shackleton Award Presentation Night was a fitting celebration of our cadets’ commitment and resilience. It highlighted the exceptional standards achieved across Derbyshire Sector, Trent Wing Air Cadets and the pride we take in supporting young people to realise their potential”.
